Public Help Sought In Mangere Homicide Inquiry

Police Seek Public Help In Mangere Attack Inquiry

UPDATED - Counties Manukau Police have now positively identified the victim of a serious assault which occurred about 6:45am this morning at the Mangere Town Centre.

The victim is 36-year Gheorghe Simion, from Romania, who resides in Mangere and who is a New Zealand resident. His next-of-kin have been notified and are at his side. He is still in a critical condition at Middlemore Hospital due to serious head injuries.

EARLIER - The Counties Manukau CIB are currently investigating the assault of a male person whose identity is unknown at this stage.

At approximately 6.45 am today the Victim was approached by two male persons and assaulted outside Foodtown in the Mangere Town Centre.

The Victim was transported to Middlemore Hospital and is in Intensive Care with life threatening injuries.

Police describe the Victim as a male with olive skin, aged in his mid 20's, height 5'10", slim build, clean shaven, dark brown or black hair in the style of short back and sides. No tattoos or markings. Wearing black pulp size 7 shoes, white star blue jeans (Jeans West) black Casio digital watch, navy blue faded t-shirt with no collar.

Police would like to hear from family and/or friends who can identify the Victim as well as those who were or may have been with the Victim leading up to the assault.

Witnesses to the assault describe the two offenders as male Polynesians in their early 20's who arrived and left in a black motor vehicle. This vehicle headed off in the direction of Mascot Avenue.

Police would like to hear from anyone who has information which will lead to the identity of the two offenders and the motor vehicle.
