More surprise strike action at TVNZ

Further surprise strike action by members of the Public Service Association and the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union is underway at TVNZ with more disruptions to programmes likely.

TVNZ staff walked off the job at 11:15am today. This strike is part of rolling strike action to be taken by union members seeking a 5 percent pay rise and additional annual leave. An hour’s strike action yesterday resulted in some of the motor racing coverage being replaced with music videos.

“These surprise strikes are clearly having an impact on the delivery of programmes which should leave TVNZ in no doubt that our members are serious about getting a fair deal,” said Brenden Sheehan, PSA Union Organiser at TVNZ.

“Union members are very clear that they deserve a fair deal from TVNZ which recognises the important work done delivering high-quality public broadcasting,” said Andrew Little, EPMU National Secretary.

Union members voted to take a series of surprise strikes after an offer by TVNZ failed to meet their expectations. The strikes are called by a Strike Action Committee which informs members by text message just before the strike will be held.

The unions represent over 300 members at TVNZ in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. They include presenters, producers, administrators, camera people and technical support and scheduling.
