ADT workers strike for more pay in the festive season

ADT cash processing workers were on strike for more pay today. Despite handling millions of dollars every day supplying banks, many of them are paid only slightly above the new minimum wage. Originally the strike was planned for 2 hours, but the 16 members of the Unite Union voted to stay out for the rest of the day. The strike could continue in the period immediately after Boxing Day.

The cash processing workers want a $14.92 start rate. This would give them pay parity with ADT’s call centre workers who communicate with cash transport workers.

Unite Organiser Chris Lennon accused the company of deliberately delaying negotiations over the last six months. ADT management wanted to delay negotiations further until January 9. Referring to the possibility of continued strike action within the festive season, one worker said, ‘It doesn’t matter, the time for this is now’.
