Putting ourselves on line to stop climate change

Putting ourselves on the line to stop climate change

Climaction, a group of people dedicated to taking action to push for real solutions to Climate Change, will put ourselves on the line on Saturday to raise money for our free public transport campaign.

Truth and Dare

In Aotea Square

Sat 21st April 1pm

We will tell the truth about climate change and do dares to raise much needed funding.

Free public transport is the only real solution to Auckland's transport emissions and congestion. It would provide a huge incentive for people to get out of their cars, freeing up space on our roads, saving us time, money and stress and making Auckland a more dynamic, efficient and environmentaly friendly city.

Climaction believes this is an achievable goal, exactly the kind of strong action we need to prevent the onset of runaway climate change, and our rates would not need to go up to pay for it. Funding could come from carbon taxes on the most polluting industries, and is a better use for this money than planting trees, which do nothing to reduce the greenhouse effect when planted outside the tropics. Money could also be saved by dropping plans for road building, extending and widening to cope with ever increasing numbers of private cars.

Free public transport can only be achieved by bringing public transport back into public hands, and taking it away from big companies who want to make a profit. Public transport should not be about private profit but about getting people where they need to go.

So we will be accepting Dares for the entertainment of the masses and the greater good. Who knows what could happen! Come along and put us to the test, how far will we really go?
