Dangerous Dogs Should Be Banned

Dangerous Dogs Should Be Banned

“In light of the recent terrible dog attack in Christchurch, New Zealanders should no longer have to put up with vicious pit bull type dogs that have been bred to fight and kill” says former Member of Parliament Brian Neeson.

Mr Neeson who introduced a bill to Parliament to ban dangerous dogs when he was an MP believes there is no excuse for the current type of dog attack on 2 year old Aotea Coxon in a Christchurch Park on Sunday.

“Every time I hear of this type of attack by pit bull type cross dogs my heart goes out to the people and families affected” he said.

“I have tried my best to introduce laws that would go a long way to seeing far less of these incidents occurring and it’s time the Government and Local Authorities stood up and started to listen to concerned citizens” said Mr Neeson.

Mr Neeson said his bill was passed by a select committee when he was an MP and believes if it had have been passed into law it would have gone along way toward helping deal with the growing problem.

“The Prime Minister should have a look at that bill in the form I proposed and that was recommended by the select committee to the House and reintroduce it to Parliament” said Mr Neeson.

“Other Countries deal with these type of dogs in a far more effective manner and New Zealand is lagging behind the rest of the world in dealing with these type of dangerous dogs” he said.

Mr Neeson believes more power and resources need to be given to Animal Control to deal effectively with the problem, which he says is just not policed hard enough.
