Striking Wharfies

Striking Wharfies

“I am not surprised to see Waterfront Workers pushing for a 4.5 percent – 4.9 percent settlement, in the latest industrial action by waterfront workers,” says Republicans Employment Spokesman Dave Llewell

We are not a poor country and while it is becoming increasingly difficult for workers to put a roof over their family’s head, they should at least be able to maintain some parity with rising living costs.

Before people go crying “here go the wharfies again” remember this, says Llewell, “It is the government that must take responsibility for high interest rates and inflation.  The Government can busily hand out high percentage increases to the public sector from the tax purse, to insulate their workers, but business has to work within a market and if they cannot provide workers with realistic wages then workers will protest.”

Mr Cullen has now said no tax relief till after the Election.  It is no help to business, if this Government refuses to compensate workers for continuing bracket creep.

“Who is the real culprit here, the Striking Workers, or Labour, the so called workers party?” asks Llewell.

If we are going to see increasing Industrial Action because of Government Policy then both workers and employers need to focus their attention on Labour in the 2008 Election.
