NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS HELPS TACKLE INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN CHALLENGES

A three person delegation from New Zealand Red Cross will join 1,500 International Red Cross and Red Crescent representatives, 194 States party to the Geneva Conventions and representatives from international organisations in Geneva next week to take part in the 30th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent which opens on 26 November.

The importance of enhanced collaboration will be the focus of the conference, taking the approach that strategic partnerships and improved cooperation hold the key to tackling a growing number of complex humanitarian challenges.

“While in New Zealand we are extremely lucky not to have to deal with some of the more complex humanitarian challenges that many countries and communities are forced to confront, the challenges are far too great in size and complexity for any one country or aid agency to tackle in isolation,” says John Ware, New Zealand Red Cross’ chief executive.

“The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the world’s largest humanitarian organisation, is well placed to deal with current and future challenges at the local, regional and international level. Internationally and here in New Zealand, we need to build on our strengths by expanding existing partnerships and exploring new ones. By working together for humanity, we can make a real difference.”

New Zealand Red Cross’ delegation will consist of Penny Mason, National President; John Evan, National Vice-President and John Ware The International Conference meets every four years and is the Movement’s highest deliberative body.
