Maori leader claims Webbs auction item is 'stolen property'

The head of Ngapuhi's Matarahurahu hapu, David Rankin, has notified Webbs auction house this morning to call off the planned auction tomorrow in Auckland of the 'Presentation Document Regarding the Native Rights Bill'.

This item was once in the possession of Mr. Rankin's ancestor, Hone Heke Ngapua (1869-1909) and was subsequently stolen. He is surprised that it has resurfaced, and that it is about to be sold, at an estimated value of $20,000.

"I am lodging an urgent Waitangi Tribunal claim at midday today" says Mr. Rankin, "and I have advised Webbs that the Police will be involved, and legal action will certainly follow if any effort is made to sell or auction the tiem".
