NZDF and NZ Police sign MOU

The Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae, and Police Commissioner Howard Broad, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Monday 17 December 2007 at Defence House which formalises the arrangements for New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) support to the New Zealand Police.

The document brings together all NZDF support to the NZ Police under one overarching MOU with supporting annexes covering specific support.

Commissioner Broad said that it was a small act to sign the document but it brought together a lot of work from a number of people and will cover where "we jointly find ourselves on operations together".

In 2008 further work will be initiated to underpin this MOU with additional annexes covering specific areas such as logistics support, training, mutual use of weapon ranges and explosive ordinance device (EOD) support. Lieutenant General Mateparae recognised the work of his staff in bringing together the document which sets in place a range of opportunities for working together with the NZ Police.

Currently NZDF and NZ Police personnel are deployed overseas on joint operations on the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) as well as in Timor Leste and Afghanistan.
