Decent work focus needed in horticulture - CTU

CTU MEDIA RELEASE 31 January 2008

Decent work focus needed in horticulture - CTU

It is now time for a dedicated focus on decent work within the horticulture industry, said CTU secretary Carol Beaumont, in response to immigration policy announced changes today (Transitional Recognised Seasonal Employer Scheme).

"Secure and rewarding work needs to be at the heart of the horticulture and viticulture sector."

"Our concern is that growers are only looking for immigration solutions rather than dealing with the larger and longer-term issues in the labour market."

"Insecure work seems to be big part of the horticulture industry's thinking. But these are not the sort of jobs that befit a major export industry seeking a sustainable future at the cutting edge of global food supply."

"We are concerned that the industry has managed to further water down the RSE scheme."

"If the horticulture industry is to start lifting its game, a more coordinated and collaborative response from them will be needed in future. We need to know that they are committed to such change," Carol Beaumont said.
