Nobel Laureate to speak at Auckland Breakfast

Kiwis will have the opportunity to hear Nobel Laureate Jody Williams speak at a public breakfast held by Oxfam New Zealand at the Auckland Museum on Thursday 21 February. Williams, who is Director of the Nobel Women's Initiative, and last year lead a High Level Mission on Darfur, will speak at the breakfast entitled Women Building Peace.

An internationally recognised speaker, in 1997 Williams became only the tenth woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on banning landmines. Since then she has been committed to working for a world free of all forms of violence, particularly against women; setting up the Nobel's Women's Initiative in 2006 together with five of her sister laureates. In 2004 Williams was named by Forbes magazine as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world.

Oxfam International's Papua New Guinea (PNG) country representative Eileen Kolma will speak alongside Williams. Kolma's work with Oxfam has a strong focus on peacebuilding and conflict reduction. Kolma has vast experience in peacebuilding initiatives, including coordinating the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence PNG, and setting up PNG's Child Rights Committee.

Both Williams and Kolma are in New Zealand to participate in the Wellington Conference on Cluster Munitions - part of a series of international meetings working towards the Oslo Process which seeks to create an international treaty to ban cluster munitions before the end of 2008.
