A multi-agency, counter-terrorism exercise will be run in the Waikato and Otago this week.

The exercise will be played out in Dunedin and in Raglan near Hamilton, with local and specialist Police and Defence responding throughout the exercise.

Deputy Commissioner Rob Pope, NZ Police says it is a Government requirement that Police and other agencies ensure they have the systems in place to work together should the need arise.

"Regular testing builds capacity within agencies that might be involved in such a response," Mr Pope said.

Agencies involved include Defence, Customs, Biosecurity, Maritime Safety, Immigration, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Fire Service and Health.

"The exercise will be run 24-hours a day from Monday, June 16. It is expected to end at midday on Friday.

"Residents in the areas involved may see emergency service personnel and vehicles, including helicopters at various times throughout the exercise."

"The exercise will cause as little disturbance as possible."
