Top Recruit Heads To Gore

The top graduate from the latest batch of Royal New Zealand Police College recruits is being stationed in Gore and starts there next week.

Constable Chris Murcott (30), who graduated from the six-month training course earlier this month, was first in the wing. He received the minister's prize, and was the overall winner of practical assessments, file preparation and finger-printing.

Born and bred in Invercargill, Constable Murcott said he was looking forward to the challenges that policing offers and to the opportunity to begin his policing career in Gore.

"I'm definitely looking forward to working in Gore, being part of a smaller community, and to the opportunity to make a difference."

Constable Murcott has wanted to be a police officer since an early age.

"I have always been attracted to the challenges the job offers and to the prospect of dealing with different situations," he said.

He is looking forward to the move south to be closer to family, after living in Christchurch and Wellington over the past few years, where he has held managerial roles with Ngai Tahu Seafood.

Another new recruit, Constable Alastair Brown, originally from Dunedin, also starts at Gore on 1 September.

The appointment of the two general duties constables brings the total number of police staff in Gore to over 20, with a further general duties constable due to start in October.
