Problem Gambling Targeted in Manukau

Problem Gambling Targeted in Manukau

Maori and Pacific Island people are significantly more vulnerable to problem gambling . As a result of the pokie industry targeting the poorest communities, and Problem Gambling Foundation's work growing substantially in Manukau, PGF and the wider Manukau community has seen the need to open a dedicated Problem Gambling service in Manukau.

This initiative is supported by Manukau City Councillors who will be attending the opening, as will many other local community leaders who are greatly concerned at the $76 million lost each year through the pokie machines.
This service will also serve Papakura and Franklin, and when combined together with Manukau, puts the yearly loss at over $102 million. A staggering amount of money from predominantly poorer communities.
The office will have a dedicated team of professionals offering counselling and public education work.

The opening is to be held on
Date: Wednesday 15th October 2008
Time: 5.30pm - 7pm
Venue: Manukau City Medical centre, 18 Wiri Station Rd, Manukau
- and will be attended by City Councillors and local Community Leaders.
