Former policeman aims to hold Nats to promise

Former South Auckland police sergeant and Manurewa candidate Richard Lewis has applauded National’s promise of extra frontline police staff but says it is long overdue.

“Thumbs up to National for making the promise of extra frontline staff to South Auckland, which is long overdue. At least unlike Labour, National actually acknowledges the problem and is taking real action towards it. Standing for Manurewa, I want to make sure this promise becomes a reality,” said Mr Lewis.

A former South Auckland police sergeant, Mr Lewis is contesting the Manurewa electorate against former Minister of Police, George Hawkins.

“I think its time to have people in Parliament who actually understand the reality of policing the frontlines instead of reading about it from their plush offices in parliament. My motivation comes from having actually policed South Auckland whilst severely understaffed. So I’m particularly passionate about ensuring that National delivers on this promise,” he says.

He says the government's decision to merge traditional policing with the (former) Ministry of Transport was a big mistake and one made without understanding the reality of policing on the ground.
