Media Should Focus on Candidates' Merits
It's the Content of Their Character, Not the Colour of Their Skin, says Campaign Manager

The campaign manager for ACT Botany Candidate Kenneth Wang has condemned media race-baiting in its coverage of the Botany campaign.

Blair Mulholland is particularly disturbed by the language of today's [28/10/08] NZ Herald article. "Unaccredited slurs like "Chinatown" and "Chinese market" should hold no approving place in a reputable newspaper," he said. "Could anyone imagine a similar article on the Samoan candidates in Mangere being published?"

Mr Mulholland also refuted claims that Kenneth Wang's campaign was only targeting Chinese voters.

"All of our signs are in English. 99% of our flyers and campaign materials are in English. Half of our campaign team is NZ European. We are seeking votes from New Zealanders of all races," said Mr Mulholland.

"Our message is clear: Kenneth Wang should be the MP for Botany because he is the best person for the job. It is a shame some segments of the media have made this campaign about race to sell newspapers," said Mr Mulholland.
