Auckland Grammar Speaks Out Against Violence

Auckland Grammar School is amongst the groups joining Amnesty International this and next week to raise awareness for the millions of women worldwide robbed of a voice to speak up against violence.

Stalls at Auckland Grammar School and the Grey Lynn Festival, and a music gig at the London Bar are some of the events being held to mark White Ribbon Day (Tuesday 25th November) – the international day where people wear a white ribbon to show they do not condone violence against women. This day also launches Amnesty International's 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence which runs until Human Rights Day on 10th December.

Violence against women is the most widespread human rights injustice in the world. Statistics show that one in three women in New Zealand have suffered physical or sexual abuse at the hands of their partner.

"Recent media cases of domestic violence only serve to highlight the dire need to do more about this grave issue, and it is heartening to see members of the community get behind this campaign so passionately," says Amnesty's Activism Support Manager, Margaret Taylor.

"It is particularly pleasing to see the boys of Auckland Grammar School taking a lead, because White Ribbon Day also celebrates the many men willing to show leadership and commitment to promoting safe relationships within families," adds Taylor.

At these events, people will have a to chance pick up white ribbons and sign appeal letters on behalf of incredibly brave women who have been abused because of their efforts to defend women's human rights.

"We hope to get as many people from the Auckland community as possible to check out these great events, proudly wear a white ribbon, and give a few seconds to help put an end to the violence," says Taylor.
