HRC Booklet Out

Human Rights Commission

Media release
10 December 2008

A booklet showcasing the work of the Human Rights Commission’s mediators has been released today, Human Rights Day.

Te Rito is a collection of 10 case studies handled by the Commission’s Enquiries and Complaints Service. The mediators work with parties to resolve complaints about unlawful discrimination covered by the Human Rights Act.

Included in this latest Te Rito are case studies involving claims of sexual harassment and discrimination based on age, religious belief, race, disability and employment status.

Te Rito also outlines the first case in a co-mediation pilot scheme between the Commission and the Department of Labour. The case involved a woman who complained that her duties, working conditions and privileges had been changed once she told her employer she was pregnant. All matters in both jurisdictions were resolved.
