Watch Out For Urban Cannabis Cultivation

Watch Out For Urban Cannabis Cultivation
New Zealand Police Central News Release

The illegal cultivation of cannabis is not just a rural issue and police in Palmerston North are asking urban residents to keep their eyes and ears peeled.

The growing season is well under way and outdoor plants should be about two-thirds grown now and far more visible.

Detective Sergeant Dave Thompson said: "Large crops recovered from remote bush and farms are well publicised, but people shouldn't just consider it a rural crime. There are plenty of people out there willing to take the risk right under the noses of their neighbours.

"Some will grow in their urban back yards while others will make use of hydroponic equipment inside to nurture the plants. What we are asking is for neighbours to be extra vigilant and report any suspicions they may have."

Only last week police in neighbouring Dannevirke recovered 17 plants being cultivated under high-powered lamps in a spare bedroom and laid charges against two people.

Signs to look out for include:

• Residents increasing fence heights
• Curtains continually closed
• Shed and garage windows being blocked out• Bright lights on constantly or at strange times
• Sounds of fans continually running

Anyone with suspicions about illegal cultivation should contact Palmerston North Police Station on 06 351 3600 or the Palmerston North Crime Line on 0800 808585.
