National challenged to come clean on Tunnel

Labour's Mt Albert candidate David Shearer today challenged the National Government to front up with what it plans to do with the Waterview Tunnel.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce did not give a straight answer during Parliament's Question Time today. Labour's Transport spokesman Darren Hughes repeatedly tried to get a clear answer from Mr Joyce, but none was forthcoming. This is disappointing, the people of Mt Albert need a straight answer from National," says David Shearer.

"The tunnel is a vital part of the SH20 project which will speed up travel times around Auckland and get traffic off Mt Albert's streets. Only Labour is committed to the tunnel and we believe the National Government should just get on with it and build it.

"Instead, National is ducking and diving over the issue. They know that carving a road through the heart of the electorate is deeply unpopular with voters.

"They are clearly not committed to building the tunnel but don't want to front up to the people of Mt Albert during this by-election campaign. The voters of Mt Albert deserve better," says David Shearer.
