Foodbanks Benefit From Defence Force ‘Cantributions’

Foodbanks from Whitianga to Christchurch will benefit this week from the generosity of New Zealand Defence Force personnel.

Mission Kiwi Can has been the NZDF’s main charity campaign for 2009 and has involved NZDF personnel throughout the country collecting canned food for local foodbanks.

The campaign started on 1 October and concluded on World Food Day, 16 October, when the collected cans were handed over to foodbanks around the country.

The Vice Chief of Defence Force, Rear Admiral Jack Steer said:

“Personnel have donated over 6,200 cans. It has been great to see NZDF personnel showing such generosity to those in the wider New Zealand community who need our assistance.”

Even Navy personnel on the HMNZS ENDEAVOUR, on exercise near Singapore, collected donations which were converted into cans and given to the foodbank of their home port, New Plymouth.

Personnel from the Navy, Army and Air Force, as well as Navy Reserve and Territorial Force units throughout the country, collected cans during the campaign. To date 6,070 cans have been donated, with final totals still to be collated.
