Resentencing Of Cuban Five
Statement on the Completion of the Resentencing Of Cuban Five.
Wellington-Cuba Friendship Society
In 2001 Five Cuban nationals (Rene Gonzalez, Gerado Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labanino) were convicted and sentenced for spying on the Miami based Anti Cuban organizations (Alpha 66, CORU, Omega 7, The 4 Commandos, the Cuban American National Foundation and Brothers to the Rescue)
These organizations had been responsible for attacks on Cuba and responsible for at least 3,478 Cuban deaths. These groups were largely financed by the CIA.
The sentences were very harsh and since their convictions there has been an international campaign for the convictions to be repealed. In 2008 the convictions were upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States and in a review of the sentences just completed there has only been a marginal reduction.
The International Campaign to Free and Fight for their Human Rights includes Amnesty International, eight Nobel Prize winners, 110 U.K.MP’s, and organizations in over 30 countries.
Along with these people the Wellington –Cuban Friendship Society calls for the immediate release of the Cuban 5 and their return to Cuba.
