Anderton Leading Parker In Race For Christchurch Mayoralty

The first public poll on the Christchurch mayoral contest since Jim Anderton announced his candidacy shows the Wigram MP enjoying a comfortable lead over the incumbent Bob Parker. In a multi-candidate contest, Anderton leads Parker by 46% to 21%, with 11% voting for other candidates and 22% unsure how they would vote for.

In a head-to-head contest, Anderton beats Parker by a two-to-one margin. Asked which of the two they would prefer to be Christchurch mayor, 61% prefer Jim Anderton and 30% prefer Bob Parker.

While 63% of Christchurch residents have a positive opinion of Jim Anderton, just 35% have a positive opinion of Bob Parker.

These results are based upon an online survey of a representative sample of 350 Christchurch City residents, conducted by UMR Research. The survey was in the field from 27th May to 7th June 2009. The margin of error for sample size of n=350 for a 50% figure at the ‘95% confidence level’ is ±5.2%.

The survey was paid for by UMR Research, and was not commissioned by any of the candidates or any other third party.
