Cameron Slater’s Court Appearance
Cameron Slater’s Court Appearance
Blogger Cameron Slater is back in the Auckland District Court at 10am, Tuesday 14th of September.
Mr Slater has been fighting against name suppression through his blog, Whale Oil Beef Hooked.
His legal counsel has argued there is no case to answer on a variety of grounds, and is confident if there is a case to answer he has a cogent defence.
“Name suppression in New Zealand needs a radical overhaul, as the current system is unjust. Prominent people, or people prominent in their own minds, get name suppression, while the rest of society face a different standard."
Mr Slater has campaigned against name suppression for nearly a year, using his blog to highlight the stupidity of the current law. The law on name suppression is out of step with suppression laws in the rest of the world, and favours those with competent lawyers, rather than promoting one law for all.
“Justice Minister Simon Power has been inept in dealing with this issue, and he should hand over the justice portfolio to a competent colleague. It is typical that a member of the liberal elite like Minister Power prefers to protect criminals rather than victims or the New Zealand public.”
