PSA launches election campaign – Public Services Keep New Zealand Working

In the face of indiscriminate cuts to our public services, the PSA, the country’s biggest union, has launched its election campaign in support of public services and the people who deliver them.

The first in a series of ads appeared in national newspapers this morning. More will be rolled out over the next 6 weeks.

“Our campaign is focusing on the facts around public services – not the government’s spin. We want to remind voters of the value of those services and what we all stand to lose if more cuts are made,” says PSA National Secretary Brenda Pilott.

“We’ve travelled the country to meet with our members, MPs and community groups in the lead up to this launch. The message we’re getting is people aren’t buying the Government’s spin that indiscriminate cuts to vital services will solve the country’s debt crisis. The public aren’t fools, they know the debt problem is mostly a private debt problem,” says Brenda Pilott.

“The government paints a picture of waste and inefficiency in the public service but the truth is New Zealand’s public services are among the most innovative and efficient in the world,” says PSA National Secretary Richard Wagstaff.

“More cuts will impact on service delivery. Highly skilled workers will be lost and we’ll end up hiring in consultants at more cost to the taxpayer,” says Richard Wagstaff.

“As well as supporting the wider economy, strong public services make New Zealand a fairer, more equal society. Investing in public services is a win for everyone. Public services don’t hold back enterprise, they support it. New Zealand is the rated the third easiest country in which to do business,” says Richard Wagstaff.
