UN Secretary-General Speaking At University Of Auckland

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, will deliver a public address at The University of Auckland next Tuesday 6 September starting at 12 noon.

At an event co-hosted with Auckland Council he will speak on “New Zealand and the world: Sustainability and security in a time of global transition”.

The venue is the Fisher & Paykel Appliances Auditorium, Owen G. Glenn Building (Business School), 12 Grafton Road.

The Mayor of Auckland Len Brown will welcome Mr Ban to Auckland and the University’s Chancellor, Roger France, will introduce him.

Mr Ban’s priorities as Secretary-General have been to mobilise world leaders around a set of new global challenges, from climate change and economic upheaval to pandemics and increasing pressures involving food, energy and water. One of his first major initiatives was the 2007 Climate Change Summit, followed by extensive diplomatic efforts that have helped put the issue at the forefront of the global agenda.

Following his 45-minute address Mr Ban will be hosted for a formal lunch at the University’s Fale Pasifika in Wynyard Street just along from the Business School.

Mr Ban is coming to Auckland on Monday for the 40th anniversary of the Pacific Islands Forum on what will be the first visit to New Zealand by a UN Secretary-General since Kofi Annan was here in 2000. During his two-day visit Ban Ki-moon will meet with Pacific Forum leaders, engage in Forum events and hold high-level discussions with New Zealand Government leaders.

The UN’s eighth Secretary-General, Mr Ban has held office since January 2007 and was recently re-elected for a second term until the end of 2016.
