Twitter worm - live tracking of the NZ 2011 elections

It is now possible to analyse election discussion on Twitter, thanks to Wellington social media agency Catalyst90, who today released a Twitter Election Worm.

According to the real-time data captured by the CatalystENIGMA technology, the ACT New Zealand party and leader Don Brash top the charts when it comes to generating the most Twitter activity and there’s a noticeable lack of activity from Labour in the run-up to election day on 26th November.

“CatalystENIGMA shows us that political activity is hotting up on Twitter in the lead-up to the election,” Tom Reidy, Director of Catalyst90 says. “Our Twitter Election Worm reporting shows how people are reacting to recent campaign activity. For the first time in a New Zealand election campaign, Twitter has become a valid tool for taking the political temperature.”

Catalyst90 can provide real-time reporting of Twitter activity including analysis of the top four political parties (Labour, National, Green, ACT) and the general public sentiment associated to each party – positive, or negative.

The CatalystENIGMA technology utilises Twitter hash tags to select relevant Tweets, performing a sentiment analysis of each Tweet to capture data relating to emotion and geographic location. Data is then collated to provide sentiment scores for each party. “SentiRate Technology measures all the tweets we have captured through our CatalystENIGMA engine and analyses the language used within a tweet to determine emotion or attitude.”
