GCSB bill’s passage will be welcomed in Washington

Global Peace and Justice Auckland

21 August 2013

Media Release:

GCSB bill’s passage will be welcomed in Washington

Tonight’s passage of the GCSB Bill will be welcomed in Washington because it opens up New Zealanders’ electronic data for warrantless searches by the US National Security Agency.

It’s ironic that while the GCSB will require a warrant to spy on New Zealanders, the US National Security Agency will be able to search all our electronic data automatically.

The NSA says “…if you are looking for a needle in a haystack then you need access to the whole haystack…” and the GCSB role is to provide the US with access to the New Zealand section of the haystack.

Nothing in the GCSB bill prevents this automatic “access authorisation” for the NSA to spy on New Zealanders’ data. In fact the bill facilitates this by approving “co-operation” with our “foreign partners” in the five eyes spy network (US, UK, New Zealand, Australia and Canada)

New Zealand has entered the world revealed by whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

It’s a day of shameful embarrassment for New Zealanders as our national independence is eroded further by a quisling Prime Minister.
