Botany & Pakuranga Labour chose their candidates for 2014 Election
Aberbaijani, Tofik Mamedov, chosen as Labour’s Candidate in Botany
At a well attended meeting on Friday the combined electorates of Botany and Pakuranga selected their candidates for the 2014 election.
Both electorates had two people contesting the nomination.
For Pakuranga this was the first contested selection for some time which is an encouraging sign for the Labour Party in the electorates and indicates that there is a definite resurgence of support for the Party.
The New Zealand
Councillors who made up the selection panel, along with
local Electorate Committee members, were most impressed with
the calibre of the nominees coming forward to stand for and
present the Labour Party’s policies in
both
electorates.
The Botany selection panel selected local
Insurance representative, Tofik Mamedov, as the candidate
after a series of speeches and rigorous question
and
answer sessions with the other nominee, 2011 Labour
candidate for Botany, Chao-fu Wu.
Mamedov is the first Azerbaijani chosen to represent a political party in New Zealand. His selection is a reflection of the multi-ethnic community that is the Botany electorate and endorsement of the contribution the many immigrant groups make to New Zealand, said Botany LEC Secretary, Alan Papprill.
“Tofik has been out and about in Botany campaigning and door knocking for the best part of a year and has come to learn a great deal about the problems and concerns of the local residents who have been struggling with soaring house prices and growing social inequalities over the past six years of a National government. His experience has equipped him to be a dynamic candidate and spokesperson for Labour in the electorate.”
After the selection Mamedov said he was looking forward to the election campaign and the chance to put Labour’s policies to the people of Botany.
