Statement - Mr Maurice Williamson MP

Statement from Acting Deputy Commissioner (Operations), Grant Nicholls:

NZ Police confirms Mr Maurice Williamson MP contacted Police during January 2014 in relation to the case of Mr Liu.

Mr Liu was facing charges of male assaults female and assault with intent to injure in relation to events that occurred on 11 December 2013.

Mr Williamson was advised that Police prosecution of Mr Liu in relation this matter would be proceeding. Mr Liu subsequently appeared in court on 1 April 2014 and pleaded guilty to both charges. The matter is still before the court and Mr Liu has yet to be sentenced.

As a result of an Official Information Act request by the NZ Herald and subsequent events, a number of Police emails in relation to Mr Williamson's contact with Police staff are being released.

"I am satisfied that our staff acted with best intentions in their interactions with Mr Williamson and the prosecution guidelines were followed in the case.

"Given the matter is still before the courts, it would not be appropriate to comment further," Mr Nicholls said.
