RNZSPCA urges farmers to respect blunt force ban
The Royal New Zealand SPCA applauds the ban on using blunt force to euthanise calves announced by the Minister of Primary Industries Nathan Guy.
“We welcome the amendment to the code of welfare for dairy cattle announced by the Minister because it will require farmers to employ more humane methods for euthanising calves,” says Ric Odom, CEO of the Royal New Zealand SPCA.
“The amendment will also bring New Zealand in line with other countries such as Chile where using blunt force trauma to euthanise calves is illegal and will help enhance our animal welfare reputation internationally.
“We urge all farmers to respect the ban and desist from using blunt force to destroy calves. When the amendment comes into effect, anyone caught using blunt force will be acting illegally – and we will act on any complaint received.”
