A talk on wealth, a rant on inequality, & NZ's latest stats

A talk on wealth, a rant on inequality, and NZ's latest stats

Dear all,

I'm giving a talk in Wellington tomorrow night on wealth in New Zealand: how much of it there is, how it's distributed, and why we should be talking more about it. It's at 5.30 at Connolly Hall in Thorndon, and organised by the Fabians. All welcome.

On a less serious note, here's a clip that's been a big hit in the US: talkshow host John Oliver delivers a passionate but entertaining rant on the growing income divide, concluding that America is truly "a country of winners - and soon-to-winners".

Back home, the Ministry of Social Development has released the latest figures on poverty and inequality. If you missed it, my blog post - arguing that these figures do nothing to change our worrying 30-year story of widened gaps - is here.

So that we're right up to date, Bridget Williams Books is working on a re-print of our short guide to inequality in New Zealand, 'The Inequality Debate', incorporating those latest figures. It'll be in stores soon - more details shortly.
