NZ on Air Refuse to Condemn “Kill the PM” Song

New Zealand On Air has refused to condemn @peace’s 'Kill the PM' song, and will not provide any assurance that no further taxpayer money will be used to support groups that promote violence and political hate. Earlier today theTaxpayers’ Union wrote to NZ On Air Chief Executive Jane Wrightson requesting the assurances. On Facebook this afternoon, NZ On Air indicated that it does not intend to condemn the song, or the band @peace.

Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the Taxpayers’ Union, says:

“We asked NZ On Air for an assurance that it will not fund groups or individuals that spout messages of violence and political hate. Instead of being stewards of a limited arts’ dollar, NZ On Air appear to be using taxpayer funds to develop bands most New Zealanders would consider abhorrent."

“Ms Wrightson is paid nearly $300,000 per year by taxpayers. She needs to front up and explain why NZ On Air have not made a commitment to stop giving this group taxpayers’ money.”

“The only reason this story broke is because the Prime Minister was the target. How many other groups spouting hateful messages have been receiving taxpayer-funded grants?”
