Time to get serious about ending homelessness!

Monte Cecilia Housing Trust applauds the policy announcements made by Labour to end homelessness.

New Zealand needs a comprehensive set of policies that address the housing and support needs of homeless people as well as significantly increasing the supply of affordable, good quality houses and flats.

Trust Executive David Zussman said

" This is a welcome step forward. Most people in New Zealand agree that there is a housing crisis, but there has been no sense of urgency to get something done. If anything the situation is getting worse! It's time to take responsibility and make a clear and public commitment to end homelessness in New Zealand"

Monte Cecilia continues to receive daily requests for housing and assistance from low income families who have nowhere else to go. These families, who often have young children, are living in garages, caravans, overcrowded houses, boarding houses and even out of cars.

One family that is still waiting to be rehoused, spent three weeks living in their car outside of the local swimming pools before they were referred to the Monte Cecilia emergency housing programme.
