The union movement is supporting the Jobs and Skills policy the Labour Party have launched today.
“We welcome this committed plan to ensure more jobs and better wages for Kiwis”. CTU President, Helen Kelly, said. “To get unemployment down and move Kiwis into decent, well paid jobs requires an unrelenting focus. Labour is showing this commitment.”
“The ‘Expectation to Training’ component of the policy is very important. There is currently a huge gap in training and skills development. By requiring employers who receive government funding such as Kick Start Apprenticeships to provide training and or professional development for their workers, we’ll see a much needed boost in skills”, Kelly said
“Ensuring more Kiwis are in paid work is absolutely critical. In the 14 and half years National have been in office since 1990, unemployment has been under 6% for only 9 months (and 3 months of that was in 2009 immediately after taking office from the Labour-led government). By comparison the Labour-led government had unemployment under 6% for 33 of its 36 quarters in office (11 out of every 12 months),“ Kelly said.
