Conservatives Provide More Slogans But No Detail

Reacting to the Conservative Party’s response to the Taxpayers’ Union call for the Party to front up with details that would allow more robust policy costings for theTaxpayers’ Union ‘Bribe-O-Meter’, Ben Craven, Spokesman for Taxpayers’ Union says:

“We called on Colin Craig to explain how much Garth McVicar's ‘tough on crime’ election slogan will cost taxpayers. Instead of providing details, the Conservatives are now suggesting that they’ll be able to run prisons at a profit by getting prisoners working.”

“Such a result would be a dramatic reform. Vote Corrections currently costs around $1.5 billion, or $885 per household. The Conservatives appear to be claiming they can get it down to zero, and we want to know how."

“If Colin Craig is to be believed that his ‘get the prisoners working’ policy results in revenue to the Crown at a similar level to Labour’s capital gains tax, he needs to provide more detail than a few lines of rhetoric.”
