Porirua’s Rapping Gigamayor Prepares for Final Battle

Porirua’s Rapping Gigamayor Prepares for Final Battle

The gloves are off - Porirua City is preparing to go into bat with Chorus to be included in the finals of the Gigatown competition.

Today Mayor Nick Leggett launched his “GigaMayor” rap video, in a final desperate bid to stay in the nationwide competition.

At 6th place currently, Porirua faces being pipped at the post with just the top five cities in the finals at the cut-off on Friday. If that happens, Nick will be asking Chorus to include Porirua as a “wild card”.

“This competition has unleashed such huge energy in our community around the idea of gigabit speed that we are determined to find a way to stay in this battle,” said Mayor Nick Leggett.

The winning town will have access to the fastest internet in the Southern Hemisphere at a discounted price for three years, and will also receive a $200,000 entrepreneur and innovation fund.

“We deserve to be in the finals, we’ve worked incredibly hard to be among the top cities and there’s a big gap between us and the rest,” says Nick.

Porirua is the only city in the lower North Island left in the running, with Gisborne the only other North Island city in the top 5 rankings.

“If Porirua wins Gigatown, the benefits will extend to the whole of the Wellington region. We will have the ability to attract more technology companies, accelerate the growth of businesses based here and provide high tech jobs and careers for our young people.

Our regional economy will receive a boost, and we'll be a big step closer to becoming a digital innovation hub for New Zealand,” says Nick.
