Intense Programme of Hapū Activity Ahead as Ngāpuhi Settlement Gains Momentum
Ngāpuhi hapū are involved in an intense period of activity over the coming weeks in preparation for the start of the historic Ngāpuhi settlement negotiations with the Crown later this year.
Hapū meet with historian next week
The Tūhoronuku IMA is working to identify its research and mapping needs to inform settlement negotiations with the Crown.
Hui have been held with the Tūhoronuku IMA’s board and mandated Hapū Kaikōrero in each of the five (5) Te Whare Tapu o Ngāpuhi regions (Hokianga, Whangaroa, Te Pewhairangi, Kaikohe-Waimate-Taiāmai and Whangarei ki Mangakahia)
These hui are the start of a concentrated research planning and information gathering exercise.
New Hapū Kaikōrero election round begins on 25 April
A new round of elections for all hapū who do not currently have a mandated Hapū Kaikōrero will begin on 25 April with Public Notices in regional and national newspapers calling for Hapū Kaikōrero nominations.
Tūhoronuku IMA update Ngāpuhi at hui throughout region in mid-May
With the settlement process gathering momentum, including the appointment of negotiators, the Tūhoronuku IMA will hold update hui in the five (5) Te Whare Tapu o Ngāpuhi regions on the 12, 13 & 14 May.
Newly appointed settlement negotiators to meet with hapū
The appointed Negotiators for the historic Te Tiriti o Waitangi settlement negotiations between the Tūhoronuku IMA – representing all Ngāpuhi - and the Crown, will be available to attend hui with hapū. 2
This will be their opportunity to meet with hapū, getting an understanding of their priorities for the settlement negotiation process.
The three Negotiators are:
• Alison Thom (Ngāti Horahia, Ngāti Toki)
• Joe Davis (Ngāti Kōpaki)
• Hemi Toia (Te Māhurehure)
