Ko Pita te heamana tuatahi o Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Kahungunu, ā, e waru tau te roa o tana noho i taua tūranga rā. Ko ia hoki tētahi o Te Taumata o Ngāti Kahungunu, ā, e mahi ana i te taha o Ahorangi Piri Sciascia, Tākuta Rangimārie Turuki Rose Pere, ā, tae noa ki a Tama Huata i te wā e ora tonu ana.

Ko ia tētahi o ngā kaiwhakarewa o te Pāti Māori, ā, ko ia hoki te Minita Take Māori mai i te 24 o Nōema 2008 ki te 20 o Hepetema 2014. Nāna i tū ai Te Whare Tū Taua o Aotearoa, ā, ko ia hoki tētahi o ngā kaiwhakatere i te waka Kura Kaupapa Māori.

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated would like to congratulate one of our esteemed Kahungunu taumata leader’s Dr. Pita Sharples. On Monday 1st June 2015 Sir Pita Sharples was made a Knight Commander of the Order of New Zealand for his services to Māori.

Sir Pita Sharples has been on a number of Trusts, Board and Committees with the driving force to establish and strengthen opportunities for Māori business growth. He was the inaugural Chairperson of Te Runanganui o Ngāti Kahungunu for 8 years from 1981-1990 and to this day he continues to be involved with Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated as one of the Taumata members alongside Professor Piri Sciascia and Dr Rangimarie Turuki Rose Pere and the late Tama Huata.

Sir Pita Sharples was one of the founding members of the Māori Party and was the Minister of Māori Affairs: 24 November 2008 - 20 September 2014. He was also Associate Minister of Corrections: 24 November 2008 - 20 September 2014 and Associate Minister of Education: 19 November 2008 – 20 September 2014. Sir Pita Sharples founded the Whare Tū Taua o Aotearoa over 25 years ago of which has received international recognition for the revival of Māori arts. Sir Pita Sharples was also instrumental in the establishment of kura kaupapa Māori, in particular, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Hoani Waititi.
