Privacy Commissioner launches $75,000 research fund

Privacy Commissioner launches $75,000 research fund

12 June 2015

The Privacy Commissioner is calling for applicants for a new privacy-related research funding programme worth up to $75,000 in total.

The successful applicants of the Privacy Good Research Fund will receive funding to conduct privacy-related research and public education or awareness raising initiatives. The funding available for each project is up to $25,000.

Especially welcome are applications that might assist with “making privacy simple” for agencies or individuals or contribute to “better public services”.

The types of organisations or agencies that are eligible for funding include academic institutions, non-profit organisations including education institutions and industry and trade associations, consumer, voluntary and advocacy organisations and for-profit organisations.

Any applications for public education and awareness raising initiatives should address privacy promotion and the protection of personal information.

This is the first year the Privacy Good Research Fund is being offered. It was established to:

· capitalise on existing privacy research capacity in academic and non-profit sectors;

· generate new knowledge and support the development of expertise in selected areas of privacy and data protection;

· increase awareness and understanding among individuals and organisations across New Zealand of their privacy rights and obligations; and

· promote the uptake and application of research results by relevant stakeholders.
