The Sensible Sentencing Trust Congratulates Minister of Justice Amy Adams

The SST is thrilled with Minister Adam's announcement on Wednesday that there will be a review with the intention of strengthening New Zealand’s legislative response to family violence.

Spokesperson for the trust Jayne Walker says "We think it is a fantastic and necessary initiative. We have supported numerous Victims of these atrocious crimes and the devastation to families is huge and lifelong"

New Zealand has the highest reported rate of domestic violence in the developed world. Walker says "The statistics are frightening; there is about one report of abuse every five minutes in this country. We have to do something immediately"

New laws could have an impact on the Government economically, saving millions of dollars. But Walker says it goes further. "Potentially it could save lives; you only need to look into the eyes of a person who has lost a loved one in this horrific way to know that would be absolutely priceless"

The Sensible Sentencing Trust would also like to see less plea bargaining down from Murder or attempted murder, Walker says "It is time to "get real" The abuse can go on for years, these offenders know that what they are doing can potentially kill and are reckless with the victims lives. It is sickening to see them get away with a lesser charge and a huge kick in the teeth for families"

The SST applauds the powerful messages and efforts of White Ribbon New Zealand "They have been instrumental in bringing about a zero tolerance for violence against Women."

Walker strongly encourages Victims or people with concerns about family violence to seek help. "The Family Violence Information Line can connect you with the right services to help you or provide you with relevant information. They are available 7 days a week from 9am to 11pm.
