Cost of poor public service workplace culture on the rise

The cost of poor public service workplace culture on the rise

The Public Service Association (PSA) says the Government’s latest Administrative and Support Services Benchmark (BASS) report shows the cost of poor workplace culture and HR practice in the public service is rising.

The latest BASS report shows nearly 30% of public service staff left their roles within the first 12 months, well above the international benchmark of 8%.

Erin Polaczuk, PSA national secretary, said "High staff turnover leads to reduced morale, less experience and higher costs for continuous recruitment,"

"These results show the Government needs to wake up and start putting serious effort into creating high-engagement workplace culture across the public service.

"Workplaces where people feel engaged have better results, lower turnover and higher morale.

"The PSA is passionate about public services, and we invite State Services Minister Paula Bennett to work with us to improve workplace culture.

"Good workplace culture means everybody wins - workers are happier, they produce better work and agencies save money," said Erin Polaczuk.
