Investigation into Saudi Sheep deal welcomed - ActionStation

Investigation into Saudi Sheep deal welcomed - ActionStation

ActionStation welcomes the news that an inquiry is to be launched into the controversial ‘Saudi Sheep’ deal after over 10,000 of its members called on the Auditor-General to investigate the deal.

“The Saudi Sheep Deal is the kind of backroom dealing that undermines our democratic process, which is why our members welcome an investigation from the Auditor-General into the Government over their dealings,” says Ryan Mearns, Campaign Director for ActionStation.

More than 10,000 ActionStation members called for a full investigation by the Auditor-General into the $11.5 million dollars of taxpayer money spent by Foreign Minister Murray McCully back in June. Mr Mearns; “We welcome the news that the public will finally be able to get to the bottom of confusion around the deal and that the Auditor-General can shed some light on why the details of the deal have been kept from New Zealanders.”

“The lack of transparency is why we called for a full investigation from the Auditor General into the $11.5 million dollars of taxpayer money spent by Foreign Minister Murray McCully on Hamood Al-Ali Al-Khala’s sheep farm in Saudi Arabia” says Mr Mearns.

“The bits and pieces of information that have been released have raised a number of questions for our members about whether proper process was followed for the use of taxpayer money. Our members want to know exactly what happened, and why.”
