Productivity Commission report confirms Govt needs to stop, collaborate and listen

The Public Service Association (PSA) says the More effective social services report by the Productivity Commission shows the Government’s constant restructuring and reviews must be stopped so a more in-depth look at social service provision can best plan for how to improve the lives of vulnerable New Zealanders.

Richard Wagstaff, PSA national secretary, said "The Commission has said loud and clear that ‘tinkering won’t work’ and the Government needs to listen,"

"Minister Tolley is now set to force through changes to Child, Youth and Family that Judith Collins has labelled ‘radical’ and ‘will shock’ people.

"The Government needs to park Paula Rebstock’s review into CYF and to listen to affected individuals, families, communities and workers delivering social services.

"The Productivity Commission report provides an opportunity for the Government to pause, take stock, consult and put forward a new vision that works for vulnerable New Zealanders and the people who work with them.

"The PSA doesn’t agree with all of the Commission’s recommendations, but some are worthy of support.

"The Commission’s recommendations around fully funding service providers will be welcomed by struggling cash-strapped NGOs and the people who work for them.

"Serious consideration is the way forward for our social services, not rushed through radical changes," said Richard Wagstaff.
