E tū: Greens’ commitment to women’s representation is fantastic

The Green Party’s commitment to an equal gender split in Cabinet is an important symbol of removing barriers to women’s advancement.

E tū, New Zealand’s biggest private sector union, commends the Green Party for their promise, made at the Council of Trade Unions conference in Wellington today.

“The Greens have shown they will walk the talk on addressing the discrimination women face at work,” says Muriel Tunoho, E tū co-president.

Green Party co-leader James Shaw announced that at least half of the Green Party cabinet ministers in a future government would be women, and encouraged potential coalition partners to follow suit.

“There are unjust barriers for women at work at any level. It isn’t inability keeping women out of senior positions, it is systemic discrimination based on gender,” says Muriel Tunoho.

“Having more women in senior positions in government is not only good for democratic representation, it sets an example for everyone else.

“We’re looking forward to having a government that takes gender equality seriously, in policy and in practice.”
