Awaroa Beach: Little Restraint From Labour

Awaroa Beach: Little Restraint From Labour

8 FEBRUARY 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers’ Union is telling politicians to butt out of the tremendous community effort to purchase a beach next to the Awaroa inlet in the Abel Tasman National Park after Labour Leader Andrew Little called upon the Government to stump up with taxpayer cash and buy the beach outright. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“What bandwagon won’t politicians use our money to jump on? Here is a fantastic grassroots initiative, rightfully earning praise and the support from tens of thousands of New Zealanders, and Andrew Little comes along and wants in on the action. If politicians want to be associated with the campaign they should be digging into their own pockets, not forking out what comes from other people’s.”

“Being prudent with taxpayers’ money means not saying yes to every good cause that comes along. Is this beach really the most pressing need for extra Government cash right now?”

“I’ve holidayed at this beach. It's one of the most romantic spots in the South Island. While I will be supporting this campaign, and hope many more New Zealanders do too, that’s no justification for politicians to splash out with other people’s money for the sake of a good headline.”
