Protesters pleased with rodeo petition
Protesters pleased to see rodeo petition presented to
Parliament today
Press release: Direct Animal
Action
Date: 17/03/2016
Today the SPCA, SAFE and Farmwatch will hand over a petition on the steps of Parliament calling on the Government to ban rodeo in New Zealand.
Direct Animal Action has been protesting at rodeos throughout the summer calling them ‘cruel’ and ‘inhumane’.
“We’re so pleased this petition has given Kiwis a chance to stand up against animal cruelty,” said Direct Animal Action spokesperson Kathleen Lafferty.
“We’ve spent months protesting the rodeo this summer because we strongly believe that rodeos are cruel and outdated. There’s no place for rodeo in our country anymore.
“Investigations by Farmwatch and other groups have shown that animals suffer abuse and even die at rodeos. In the last two years four animals have died due to injuries they’ve sustained while performing in the rodeo.
“Kiwis don’t like animal cruelty and this petition sends a strong message to the Government that many New Zealanders no longer find this form of entertainment acceptable.
“We feel that a ban on rodeo is imminent and we’re interested to hear the Government’s response to the petition. We’ll definitely be protesting next rodeo season if we don’t see a ban by then. said Ms. Lafferty.
