Taxpayers' Union Welcome WCC Seeing Sense on Living Wage

MEDIA RELEASE
Taxpayers' Union Welcome WCC Seeing Sense on Living Wage
13 MAY 2016

The Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming Wellington City Council’s backdown on implementing a ‘living wage’ requirement for its contractors after the Wellington Chamber of Commerce threatened legal action over the move. Taxpayers’ UnionExecutive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“It appears that the Council has had second thoughts about the legality of its actions. Our own legal advice was that the move was almost certainly a breach of the Local Government Act which requires the Council to be ‘efficient’ and ‘effective’.”

“This backdown means that, at least in the short term, the Chamber and the Taxpayers’ Union will not be challenging the Council under judicial review. The result means that Wellington ratepayers will be able to keep more money in their pockets.”
