May 18th 2009
marked the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka. The cost of
this end was the loss of tens of thousands of lives and
suffering of hundreds of thousands more. Eight years later
there have been no answers or accountability.
The election of a new President, Maithripala Sirisena, in January 2015 was considered by many Western governments as a paradigm shift. But two years after his election questions remain unanswered and the suffering continues.
On the 23rd of May 2017, the members of Wellington Tamil Society will gather on the steps of Parliament to remember those who lost their lives and still have no justice and to ask the New Zealand Government to support the call for an international investigation into Genocide.
