Councils across country must confirm stance on fuel tax
21 JUNE 2018
The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union
is calling on every council in New Zealand to confirm
where it stands on regional fuel tax, after 14 councils were revealed to be discussing
implementing one.
Taxpayers’ Union spokesperson Jordan Williams says, “The Government’s so-called ‘regional’ fuel tax is now out of control, as councils across the country seek to imitate Auckland Council’s revenue grab.”
“Fuel taxes disproportionately hurt the poor, who often commute from outer suburbs and own older vehicles. That’s why we need increased transparency on councils’ intentions.”
“Every council in New Zealand now needs to front up to ratepayers and confirm where they stand on the fuel tax. If they don’t rule out a fuel tax, we can only assume they’re considering one.”
